A Brief Recap of the A-7, A-9, and A-10

Some quick facts regarding these aircraft and their competition in the A-X selection:

  1. The competition between the A-9 and A-10 took place between October and December 1972, with the A-10 being selected. The competition took place at Edwards AFB.
  2. At the insistence of Senator Cannon, Chair of the Tactical Air Subcommittee of the Armed Services Committee, a second flyoff was conducted in April-May 1974 between the A-7 and the A-10 “under combat conditions” at Fort Riley, Kansas. The A-10 was again selected.
