1977: The Air Force announced that women would be recruited for Titan II combat crew duty. Classified as combat duty, Titan II crew duty was only open to men when the system became operational in 1963. First Lieutenant Patricia M. Fornes (here as a captain) was the first woman to pull a Titan II alert on September 16, 1978.
