1918: MEDAL OF HONOR. After destroying a number of enemy aircraft within 17 days, 2Lt Frank Luke of the 27th Aero Squadron volunteers to go on a patrol to shoot down German balloons. Despite an attack by enemy fighters, he succeeds. Severely wounded, Luke drops close to the ground, where ground fire brought him down. On the ground, the Germans ask him to surrender, but Luke draws a pistol and defends himself until the Germans kill him.
