1948: The Air Force announces a policy of racial integration in the ranks. Seen as wasteful and inefficient, segregation was to be eliminated by using all personnel in free competition for any duty within the Air Force for which they may qualify. This policy predates President Truman’s mandate to integrate the military which was not issued until July. Pioneers like Benjamin Davis led the way forward.
