1942: FIRST EIGHTH AIR FORCE MISSION. Col (later Lt Gen) Frank A. Armstrong, Jr., leads 12 B-17s from the 97th Bomb Group against the Rouen-Sotteville marshalling yards in France. The raid is the first Eighth Air Force heavy bomber mission from the U. K. against Western Europe in World War II and demonstrates the feasibility of daylight bombing.
