1962: In tests to reveal the relationship of speed, altitude, and angle of attack to aerodynamic heating of an aircraft’s exterior surfaces, the X-15 No. 2 reached nearly 900° F while flying at 90,877 feet at 2,943 MPH (Mach 4.4). USAF Major Robert A. Rushworth flew the aircraft. (USAF Art Program)
