1958: The Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) is established by the Department of Defense and will assume leadership of the Nation’s outer space program. Authorized by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, ARPA was created to projects to expand the frontiers of technology and science and reach far beyond immediate military requirements.
